Half of that statement is true, and half is false. It is true that atheism is not a religion. However, atheism is not simply lack of religion. There are many people who really don't think twice about God or religion and hold no particular convictions at all. There are also many people who claim to be ';spiritual, but not religious,'; who believe in ';some sort of higher power'; but don't follow any particular religion.





Atheism, on the other hand,actively denies the existence of God. Atheists have thought about God, and rejected the idea. There is no higher power, there is no spirituality. Atheism is the belief that there are no gods or simply the noon belief in any gods. There are people who believe a god or gods who do not have ';religion' per say, and there are people who have religion but do not believe in any gods.

Atheism is lack of belief in gods, nothing more. It is not a religion and it in no way qualifies as one. Some atheists do practice non-theistic religions, however. But again atheism in and of itself is in no way a religion.
